Apparently it was very common around this time to use Human Bones as decoration in churches. The Cemeteries were extremely overcrowded. I heard the Cemetery in Florence has graves as much as 50 deep, and it is almost entirely modern. There were artists who specialized in decorating with human bones. There is a church outside of Prague with the most intricate chandeliers made entirely out of Human Bones. This particular church was a crypt expressly for clergy and Monks. Though it borders on the macabre, I have to say there is really no experience like being in the presence of the skeleton of a saint. I can only imagine how it would feel to be around so many HOLY BONES!
I want someone to make a zombie movie, where the bones from one of these churches reassembles themselves in to full skeleton armies to stalk and torment the souls of the living!
also I am impressed at how closely the bones are patterned after Baroque style. (it was done in the Baroque period from my understanding) but it seems marginally disrespectful and somewhat absurd to fashion the bones of the ancient after a modern whim. Or rather, the baroque period seems far too late of a time for this sort of art/decor to be socially acceptable. Also, strange that they seemed to have the intention of having the crypt on display, thus necessitating decoration...? Most of the bone churches I've seen seem to make a bit more sense than this one (in terms of style and social climate)
this is kind of gruesome but definitely exquisite...
